“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”
-Hippocrates
What if you only ate foods that also had medicinal value? It may seem odd to us now, but that is exactly what food is for. Somehow we confused the real reason to eat - to nourish and heal - with a fake and manufactured reason - to satisfy cravings. In this weekly series, I will talk about whole foods that heal. That gives you a new food to try each week - so you can feel the benefits for yourself.
This week's food:
Apples
Vitamins: A, C
Minerals: Iron, Potassium
This week's food, the apple, comes from the rose family. Apples are full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Tart apples give liver support. Apples help reduce cholesterol and improve bowel function. (They are great for constipation AND diarrhea.) They reduce the risk of stroke and type 2 Diabetes. They also help in the prevention of prostate, colon, and lung cancer.
I use apples in salads and juices. I love to eat apples as a snack as well. (I usually sprinkle a little grey celtic salt over my apple slices.) Baked apples with a little sugar and cinnamon make great natural desserts.
It's important to eat organic apples since the non-organic kind are over sprayed with pesticides.
Apple cider vinegar is also an important staple to have in the house. People use it for sunburn, dandruff, and oily skin. Many people add it to their morning water to get the day started right.
It is also considered an antiviral and antioxidant.
This week, buy some organic apples and some apple cider vinegar!
