Food = Medicine - Asparagus

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”
                                                                            -Hippocrates

What if you only ate foods that also had medicinal value? It may seem odd to us now, but that is exactly what food is for. Somehow we confused the real reason to eat - to nourish and heal - with a fake and manufactured reason - to satisfy cravings. In this weekly series, I will talk about whole foods that heal. That gives you a new food to try each week - so you can feel the benefits for yourself.

This week's food:
Asparagus

Vitamins:A, B, C, E
Minerals: Potassium, Zinc

This week's food, asparagus, has been known to help with female issues like fertility, lactation, and PMS. It is also used for detoxification, and as a prevention for kidney stones.

Asparagus can be prepared quickly and easily. It can also be a great snack. I eat it with a drizzling of olive oil and just a bit of grey celtic salt.

Grab some organic asparagus for a great side dish this week!

10 Herbal Health Books to Buy Now

With information coming out everyday on the dangers of pharmaceutical drugs and the changes in availability to healthcare, it has never been more important to educate yourself about natural healing. Here are 10 books that you need to buy now (and read now so that you can obtain the herbs you will need in the future). Keep these books in a safe place for the future - you never know when you might be the only healthcare provider your family can find and/or afford.

1. Herbs for Health and Healing by Kathi Keville

2. Herbal Antibiotics by Stephen Harrod Buhner

3. Herbs and Influenza by Kathy Abascal

5. The Handbook of Vintage Remedies by Jessie Hawkins

6. The Aromatherapy Book by Jeanne Rose

7. Be Your Own Doctor by Rachel Weaver

8. Comfort for the Burned and Wounded by John W. Keim

9. Practical Herbalism by Wendell W. Whitman

10. Where There is No Dentist by Murray Dickson

There are so many websites and books out there. (I have not listed herbal and emergency child birthing books and herbal pet care books.) I think these 10 books are a great way to get started!
